Tzatziki:
My New Tartar Sauce

Made this for a dinner party last week, and it was so easy I couldn’t believe it!  You may remember tzatziki from your local Greek restaurant–it’s that rich and creamy, yogurt-based sauce that traditionally accompanies gyro sandwiches and lamb kebobs.  But it’s  so simple and delicious that I thought, why not try it with grilled salmon?   Tom threw the fish on the fire, and I threw the tzatziki ingredients into a bowl, and we had an elegant, company-worthy dinner on our hands in no time.   And now I’m thinking, with that extra fresh flavor from the mint and dill, wouldn’t tzatziki make the perfect, easy dip for crudite, flatbread, or pita chips?  I’ve got a new party appetizer on my hands!

Here’s what you do.  Combine the following ingredients in a medium-sized bowl:

  • 2 cups Greek yogurt (You can use whole milk yogurt if you want, but I use non-fat.  Can’t taste the difference!)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup cucumber, diced
  • 1 cup fresh dill, chopped
  • ½ cup fresh mint, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Then stir to combine and serve.  Yes, it’s just that easy!  And that’s why I’m never making conventional tartar sauce again.
