Old Fashioned Macaroni & Cheese
Macaroni and cheese is a comforting favorite that can be served as a side or a main course. A blend of fresh rosemary, sage, and thyme adds depth to this luscious recipe while remaining true to its classic American roots.
Ingredients
- 1 cup light cream
- 1 package poultry blend fresh herbs (includes 2 sprigs rosemary, 2 sprigs sage, 6 sprigs thyme)
- ½ pound elbow macaroni
- 2 cup sharp cheddar cheese blend, shredded
- ¼ cup chives, chopped
- 3 tablespoons margarine
- 1/3 cup low fat sour cream
- 2 eggs, well beaten
- 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
- ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
- ½ cup crushed croutons
- 3 tablespoons thyme leaves
Instructions
- In small saucepan, bring cream to a simmer.
- Immediately submerge the herbs, whole sprigs, cover and remove from heat.
- Let sit for 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cook macaroni according to package directions.
- Drain and stir with cheese & chives.
- Blend margarine, sour cream, eggs, pepper & salt and add to macaroni.
- Discard herb sprigs from the cream and add to the macaroni.
- Pour into an oven proof casserole dish and top with crouton crumbs.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
- Just before serving, top each portion with sprinkling thyme.
Quick Notes
A California Chardonnay would accent the flavors of this recipe well.
