Celebrate with Fresh Herbs

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks to those you love for all they’ve done for you over the course of the year. And what better way to thank friends and family than with a festive, flavorful, and unforgettable meal? So, this Thanksgiving, stock up on sage, rosemary, thyme, parsley, and oregano, and get cooking! A fresh herb turkey brine gives the traditional bird an extra bit of holiday flare; a sage rush gives party guests the pick-me-up they need to pitch in and help in the kitchen; and pumpkin cake with sage ice cream ends the night on a sweet note. Happy Thanksgiving!

The festival of lights is a time for families to celebrate the miracles of the season as well as the pleasures of cooking and eating with each other. Our potato latkes with fresh basil and chives are crisp and light and perfect with sour cream and a dollop of apple-mint sauce. End a meal with loved ones by serving up slices of apple-rosemary matzo cake garnished with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of honey. Then sit back and relish the warm glow that comes with friends, family, and very good food.

Christmas is just around the corner! Don’t have dinner planned yet? Don’t worry. We’ve got plenty of elfish tricks up our sleeve to help you out! From our refreshing pear basil sipper and our show-stopping herb roast beef to our glorious cranberry-thyme cheesecake, we’ve got dinner covered. And if Santa needs a little inspiration, we’ve even got a post on gifting fresh herbs—the best gifts are those you make yourself!

Out with the old, and in with the new! 2014 is almost here, and this year you can ring in the New Year with a meal that is as flavorful and fresh as it is easy to prepare. Our rosemary-garnished cranberry pear ginger fizzes are sure to keep spirits high as midnight draws near, and a crown roast with wild rice dressing is just the thing to keep guests satiated long into the night. Our lemon-thyme shortbread cookies (we highly recommend dipping them in dark chocolate!) are so good they might even break a few New Year’s resolutions. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Pumpkin Sundae with Sage Caramel

This pumpkin sundae makes the most of fresh sage combining it with a deep, amber salted caramel sauce for a festive finale to any holiday meal. Whipped cream sweetened with brown sugar and a sprinkling of salted pepitas, or pumpkin seeds, adds a finishing touch that takes store-bought pumpkin ice cream to the next level.

Pumpkin Bread with Candied Sage

Adapted from Cooks’ Illustrated’s “Really Good Pumpkin Recipe,” we can vouch that this pumpkin bread is really good. With toasted walnuts, fresh sage, and a crumbly cinnamon sugar topping, these loaves are a perfect way to start the morning or to wrap a long autumn evening. We suggest serving the pumpkin bread with fresh butter alongside hot apple cider or hot chocolate.

Gingerbread Landscape with Rosemary Trees

Your mother may have told you not to play with your food, but she probably never saw this snowy, gingerbread landscape. Inspired by Nigella Lawson’s serving suggestions for her Guinness Gingerbread, these peaks and valleys of cinnamon, ginger, and brown sugar goodness are a perfect winter wonderland when dotted with fresh rosemary pine trees, sprinkled with powdered sugar snow, and bedecked with tiny winter wanderers (we got ours from World Market, but the sky’s the limit–try plastic animal figurines, tiny Santas, miniature sleighs, etc.). Children and adults alike will enjoy helping to make and eat this festive, holiday treat. And of course, you should feel free to use whatever gingerbread recipe you like! Happy baking.

Sausage, Jalapeño Hush Puppies with Green Onions and Cilantro

Adapted slightly from one of our favorite food blogs, Shutterbean.com, this recipe for sausage, jalapeno hushpuppies comes together quickly, feeds a crowd, and is a great way to get all of the flavor of cornbread-‘n’-sausage stuffing into a bite-sized appetizer with a kick of spice and a dose of herbal freshness to boot. These puppies pack plenty of fresh cilantro and green onion flavor in addition to minced jalapeno and ground chorizo sausage.

  • Holiday Herb Quicktips:

    • Dress up your mashed or roasted potatoes with fresh herbs. For mashed potatoes, stir in minced fresh herbs right before serving. For roasted potatoes, add the herbs along with olive oil, salt and pepper before roasting.
    • With leftover beef, prepare a beef and vegetable soup—use leftover herbs like bay leaves, parsley, rosemary and thyme to season the broth.
    • Minced fresh herbs make a great addition to homemade rolls or biscuits. Stir the herbs in with the dough prior to forming the rolls or biscuits. Bake as the recipe instructs.
    • Flavor your gravy with fresh herbs by simmering the pan drippings and broth with fresh herb sprigs. Prepare the gravy as you normally would and discard the herbs before serving.
    • Flavor your turkey extra thoroughly! Combine chopped fresh herbs, garlic, and butter. Spread this mixture under the skin of the breast meat before roasting your turkey.
    • Make homemade turkey broth with your turkey carcass after Thanksgiving. Add fresh herbs to the simmering pot for extra flavor.
    • Give your stuffing a flavor-boost by adding fresh herbs to the recipe—rosemary, sage, parsley and thyme all work great in most stuffing recipes.
